History & Theology
Maybe the two shouldn't go hand in hand but they do. Of course centuries ago there was only one church,...the 'universal' church,...the Catholic Church. It wasn't until Martin Luther nailed his 95 grievances on the cathedral door of Wittenberg Germany in protest that the 'Protestant Movement' was born and a new and dynamic branch of Christendom was added.
At the turn of the last century another great awakening stirred and led many former main stream church members into greater depths of faith, including a renewed awareness of, sensitivity to and application of the biblical spiritual gifts! As in the NT church, there was a need to channel the new spiritual fervor of this time into some real and tangible expressions. For many churches and believers that expression was a calling to overseas missions work and a strong urgency to reach those around them with the good news that Jesus Christ died for them!
Many recognized the value of networking their efforts together, especially as it pertained to missions. In 1914 a gathering of churches and pastors was called for Hot Springs, Arkansas to discuss what might be done toward these ends without creating another 'denomination'. After many weeks of prayer and discussion the Assemblies of God was formed and God has since blessed those decisions tremendously.
